Faux fur 2

This is the second part of the Faux Fur diptych. Pastel pencil on brown paper.

Faux fur 1

This is one part of a diptych which was done years ago. It's pastel pencil on some sort of brown paper. I think it's about 10" x 10" in size. I'll see if I can find it's other half and post it next.
Still no new work from me and now that Xmas is near there is even less chance.

This old drawing was done with brown pencil on cartridge paper .. I used a reference image but changed it greatly to come up with this.

Another ancient Egyptian - 'Meritaten' - I called her that, although the real Meritaten may not have looked like this. This was done mainly from my imagination after looking at a reference picture of a girl with her head turned away. I used pastel for this drawing on Fabriano pastel paper .. it's a very old drawing.

One small cherry

Just a small paint doodle - a little cherry painting - Jo Sonja acrylics on canvas toned with burnt sienna/burnt umber mix. It's good to flex those brushes occasionally - even on a small one like this. :)

The look

Lately I have come close to deleting this blog and having a huge bonfire with my existing artworks. I've actually had my finger on the delete button .. but hesitated. Just one of those
things that artists (so called) go through I guess.
So here is another quite old one .. Jo Sonja paint on canvas.

Charcoal sketch

Just a small quick charcoal sketch on Fabriano pastel paper.

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

I've found another image of one of these rather old drawings - done years ago - this is the preliminary drawing for a pastel. It's pastel pencil on Fabriano pastel paper. Sometimes I like the first sketchy drawing better than the finished pastel.

Another older drawing .. in fact I think this is about ten years old .. pencil on cartridge paper. It's the ancient egyptian Merymose who was the Visier to the Pharoah Amenhotep 111. It was drawn completely freehand and I think it is about twelve inches tall - I still have the original drawing - it's one that I will always keep. I like the timeless look in his eye - I think it's a rather serene portrait. I'd like to go and visit him in the museum - but I doubt I'll ever get to Egypt - I think he is still in Egypt! :)

White shirt ..

I've been looking through some of my old stored images lately and came accross this one that I had forgotten about. I remember after I painted it years ago I almost threw it in the bin but there were a few things that I liked about it and being new to acrylics at the time I decided to keep it. I quite like the hair .. not sure about that nose :0 but here it is anyway. Jo Sonja acrylics on canvas. I've cropped it quite a bit.

Today I was determined to paint 'something' .. after being inactive for so long. I need more practice with acrylics but find them sooo frustrating to use in our Aussie summer especially when using them for portraiture and figure painting. So I may stick to other subjects for the time being. This is a small one 6" x 6" Jo Sonja acrylics on canvas - I have a container full of white artificial tulips that I used for the subject matter and I played around with the colours a bit. Then finally I used a bit of pencil to draw on some parts.

Acrylic sketch

This small sketch was done some time ago when I was experimenting with Jo Sonja paint and the tecniques that could be achieved with it. The majority of this sketch was done using the 'dry brush' technique on canvas. The canvas was first gessoed and a coat of burnt umber applied - the painting was worked on top of this.

Sketchy one ..

Here is a sketchy one from some time ago - pastel and pastel pencil on brown Fabriano Tiziano paper. There have been a lot of distractions keeping me away from my easel lately .. a sick pony and a cat with an amputated tail being just two of them. Truely! :)

Green coat

Another of those quick smallish pastels .. just gotta keep at them .. or I get lost with the flesh colours. Especially since I can't get my favourite colours by Bruynzeel anymore - it's a bit 'hit or miss' these days with the skin colours - sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

Quick pastel sketch ..

I've been so busy lately that I've not had time to get even a little sketch done. So here is an older one on Fabriano pastel paper .. in pastel pencil. I don't think this is the original colour of the drawing .. I think something went haywire with the scanning .. but I liked it .. so here it is.

Small sketch

Sometimes when I have not drawn or painted anything for a while .. I think .. I'll just do a small sketch to keep my hand in. But these small sketches can be a bit frustrating as they are so small that they get a bit fiddly and small details are sometimes difficult to get right eg. the eyes!
Anyway, I think the treatment of this one is a bit Renoir-ish - I watched a show about him recently and some of it must have rubbed off on me. I like the colours here. From a reference photo but changed.

Red Coat

This small pastel was done very late at night and I got a bit lost with the flesh colours being a bit rusty and the light being poor here where I work. I managed to salvage it in the end. I prefer to draw at night (for some reason) .. that's when my 'drawing brain kicks in'...

Two Pears

Another old one from a couple of years ago. The pears were painted from life and the rest was invented as I went along. Jo Sonja acrylics on canvas.

Unfinished Pastel

Well .. I guess it's better to show something recent here rather than all the old stuff. This is an unfinished smallish pastel drawing that I decided to abandon when I lost interest in it. Because I always alter the reference photo I sometimes lose my way due to tiredness, lack of focus etc. .. excuses .. excuses. lol

Ahhh! This is more like it. Back to the pastel .. and a bit of collage for added interest. This pastel is quite small 10cm x 15cm approx. I've missed being away from pastel whilst I've been trying to get myself 'painting' more. With this one I did the sketch and then tried to very gently use fixative on it - so as not to lose too much of the light details. Some did disappear and I put them back a bit later. I'm not sure about the gold bits at the top .. but once they are stuck on they are there to stay. I'm going to try to do more of these small pastels - they don't take long to do.

Earlier this year I completed a Printmaking course at Tafe. This is a Solar Print with Chine Colle added. I used my drawing of the Pelicans for this one and quite enjoyed the printmaking experience. I found the Solar printing especially interesting - I would like to do some more sometime.

The Belly Dancer

This is a very old drawing of 'The Belly Dancer'. I used that very hard brown pencil for this one. I think the size was about 12" x 10".

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

This small pastel was done about a year ago I think. It's 10.5cm x 16cm. I'm still rounding up some of my old works to put up here as I don't seem to get much time to create anything new. But I do have the beginnings of one on the easel right now ... so hopefully it will appear here soon if it doesn't find its way to the bin in the meantime. hehe!

Red Beads

Well ... at last I have managed to do some painting .. this one is just off the easel this afternoon. The size is 10" x 10" on gessoed canvas. I have used Jo Sonja acrylic paint and a reference photo of a catwalk model but have changed it quite a bit. I also did a bit of drawing on the finished painting with a felt tip pen.

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

This blog is full of bits and pieces .. I tend to jump around a lot between media and subject matter. hehe! This one is painted with Jo Sonja Acrylic Colour on canvas.. after trying other acrylic paints I always come back to the Jo Sonja - it gives the best results with easy application. It's so easy to use .. I don't like mixing colours .. well maybe just a little - I'm lazy with mixing. I've become quite familiar with the colour range. This one was done with a limited palette. I've cropped this a bit.

Three pears

These pears were painted from a still life setup that I put together a few years ago. I used Jo Sonja acrylic colour for these ... I like the way her paint handles. I was experimenting with the paint when I did this one .. and after a while it seemed to come together.

A very old drawing done with brown pencil on cartridge paper. I have not used this pencil for quite a while as the lead was hard and a lot of pressure was required to get the tones right. But I quite like the effect it gives.

Thursday, August 27, 2009

A very old pastel sketch .. a preliminary one .. the colour was added later and I have that image here somewhere. But I always liked this quick sketch ..

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

A more recent pastel sketch from a reference image of a fashion model. I used to do these on a regular basis but have not lifted a pencil in months. I sketch them straight off the computer screen and alter them suitably :)

Unfinished oil painting

I made this blog to encourage me to produce new work on a more regular basis .. but so far the usual problems have prevented this. No time and no space to work. So here is one that I did in a Tafe class a few years ago. It's an oil painting done from observing a photograph. I started with a burnt sienna underpainting and whilst it was still wet started to paint some colour into it. It's unfinished. I think it's about 12" x 16".

It's another one of those interesting heads that I keep on sketching! As usual it's on Fabriano Pastel paper.

Saturday, August 15, 2009

A small pastel on dark brown Fabriano pastel paper. I liked the colour of these and imagined that they would look good against a dark background .. and I think they do suit the dark background.

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

These are a couple of Trace Monotypes that I did recently. The Lily pattern is a variation of the previous Aluminium Plate Etching that I started this blog with. The one with the leaves and berries is a variation of my tablecloth :) I used Sakura Oil based printmaking ink for these. they were quite easy and quick to make - I made them on a sheet of perspex on my kitchen benchtop.

I really have not had time to do anything much new .. so here is another older unfinished sketch. Pastel pencil was used for this one.

White dress

Another 'older' painting .. This was first sketched on canvas using a Cretacolor Nero pencil. Then the painting was done using Jo Sonja Acrylic colour and more drawing over the top with the Nero pencil. I quite enjoy working with paint and pencils like this. The size is 25cm x 30cm

Red Hat

I've still not had time to do any experimenting with anything new .. so here is a small pastel sketch that I did some time ago. It's quite small .. can't remember the exact size .. approx. 6cm x 8cm I think. I've just noticed that she seems to be missing an ear... hmm! lol

Thursday, August 6, 2009

This pastel drawing was done some time ago, but as I have nothing new to post at the moment ... this will have to do for now.
I use photographs for lots of my drawings but I alter them a lot .. that's the fun part :)
I used pastel pencils for this one and I always use Fabriano pastel paper as it has a nice texture to it.

First post

Here I am at last starting my blog and making my first post. I've been going to do this for a couple of years as a means of motivating myself to produce art on a more regular basis.
My main interest is figure drawing/painting but have recently taken some classes in a printmaking course so I will start off by posting one of the prints. This is an Aluminium Plate Etching which was quite labour intensive to produce. I enjoyed the process but
I don't think I will be doing any more of these. I quite like the end result.
