Red Oil Pastel

Have not been doing much artwise lately .. not enough energy!  So here is one from many years ago .. it's an oil pastel on canvas.  I do remember how I made this one.  Firstly I painted a red background onto gessoed canvas.  I painted some pinkish paint onto a stencil and lay it down the side of the canvas and lifted it off to reveal the pattern.  Then I drew the girl on with a pencil and painted over the pencil lines with burnt umber.  Finally I worked the oil pastel over the top and scraped it back a bit to reveal some of the pattern.  The oil pastels were a very cheap brand but they worked well.  I remember that I used a small palette knife to push the oil pastel about.  This was a first for me and I don't know what possesed me to follow this method but it worked quite well and I would like to do some more.  Interesting things those oil pastels.  Size is approx 6 1/2" square

Thanks for the explanation of your technique. This is lovely. I have oil pastels which I love, but I have never mastered their use. I'll try pushing them around with a knife.

Thanks for commenting Leslie. I too should do more experimenting with the oil pastels .. they can be fun and force me to work at a slower pace. :)

Your lovely oil pastel makes me want to try them. I love yur use of limited color and the softness of your line.

Thanks for visiting Shirley. I think I only used three or four colours on this. I found that the coloured background helped a lot. :)
