Last Post for 2013

Well 2013 is almost over and good riddance to it I say.  I suffered from ill health for most of the year unnecessarily due to a doctors decision to alter medication that I was on.  I am on the improve now but it takes a long time to get back to normal.  I hope to get my own studio later in 2014 and am very excited about that as my current workspace is about 1 metre square and that includes an easel, chair, small table and me.  I am looking forward to having a space where I can be as messy as I like and get into doing some large paintings.  This image above is a 'very old' one .. possibly ten years old .. it's a drawing on canvas - not sure what I used for this.  I recently found an old CD that I had burned some images onto years ago and this was one of them.

Faux Fur

I had hoped to keep posting at a more regular rate but it's been a bad news week here so making art is the furthest thing from my mind right now.  This is an old sketch done with a Cretacolor Nero Pencil some time ago.
P.S.  Thought I had better pop back here just to say that I am ok  ...

Wendy Sharpe Exhibition - Burlesque & Backstage

When Wendy Sharpe visited Paris last year she attended an auction at the Folies Bergere where they were auctioning off costumes and props of yesteryear.  Wendy bought some of the headresses and costumes worn by the showgirls of the past.  The headresses had the name 'Francine' handwritten on the inside.  Wendy chose Sarah (my daughter above) to sit for the paintings of Francine.  There are five paintings of Francine altogether.  This one is called 'Sarah as Francine with Ostrich Feathers'.  We did a google search for Francine and may have found her - a showgirl in 1951 at the Folies Bergere.

Little Red Riding Coat ...

A little bit of fiddling about by me today.  I became quite ill in August and am trying to get back on my feet again.  This is just a quickie .. I wanted to experiment with oil sticks and some sort of drawing media. For this one I used an old  red Oil Stick which I think was past it's use by date and a woodless graphite pencil.  I used Como paper for this which is probably the wrong thing to use with oil sticks - it's a heavy duty drawing paper.  Looks like it should be in a children's book!  I am considering buying some new oil sticks  and experimenting further.

Headress No. 5 variation 1

This is a variation of the previous drawing .. after altering it and fooling around with it somewhat this afternoon.  It's on the rough side of Canson Mi-Tients.  I may do some further experiments with this one.  I used mostly Conte hard pastel sticks for this.

Headress No. 5

Another one of these headress pastel drawings.  Lotsa pinkish colours here and some black.  I do love black!  No one can ever convince me not to use black - love to push other colours into it.  This is on Canson Mi Tients pastel paper - rough side.  I am beginning to enjoy using the rough side these days.

Headress No. 4

I've been doing some smallish drawings with fancy headresses in them lately.  I thought they might make intereting paintings if I ever get around to them.  Pastel Pencil and Conte on Fabriano Tiziano pastel paper.

Beth - Solar Print transparency ..

Whilst looking through a drawer recently I came upon this black and white transparency of 'Beth' .. a pastel drawing done previously. I was going to make a solar print of this but decided that the plate that I made was not up to scratch .. so abandoned the idea. After seeing it again with fresh eyes I found it to be a rather striking image. Must look for the plate and see if it could be rescued.
Not much new work from me .. seem to be in some sort of sporadic 'go-slow' mode.  Hopefully things will improve.

Tonight's sketch ..

Tonight's doodle is just a cropped part of a larger drawing which I did not really like.  It seemed a bit stiff and not really what I wanted.  But having managed to get something done I decided to save this part rather than bin the lot.

The Flamenco Dancer ..

Back! ... that might sound strange to some of you .. but I have been lost in a wilderness as far as my art goes for about 2 years.  After a big operation in  2010 many things changed for me .. I felt like I had lost my way, especially with my art.  Recently things have changed with my health.  I am ok .. in very good health in fact.  But the operation changed the way my body worked and this had an impact on my art, my outlook on the world and my life.  I have been artistic since as long as I can remember .. probably kindergarten when my classmates would ask me to draw in their school books for them.  It's the 'Flamenco Dancer' .. drawn from a very poor image in pastel pencil and I enjoyed drawing it  'very much' .. it is my drawing style! emerging again.  It is a simple drawing .. no embelishments .. just the figure and especially the face.  'The Flamenco Dancer'  She does her job .. dances for the patrons in the club, she is beautiful but she has a life beyond the stage and it shows in her face here.  The image was small and so I just went with the shapes and this is what emerged.  'The Flamenco Dancer'.

Zena

A small quick drawing done this evening .. in poor light so may look a bit rough .  Pastel Pencil on Fabriano pastel paper as usual.  Slight distortion on this one to compensate for my lack of imagination ... lol

Black Hat

This Pastel Pencil sketch could probably do with a little tidying up here and there.  I'm a bit rusty!

The initial sketch .. I think it's on Fabriano pastel paper .. although it looks more grainy than usual.

Little sketch

Just a little pastel pencil sketch.  It's very hot here today .. over 30 degrees so I'm staying close to the air conditioner.
